Soca Style Groove Using Kit & Conga Drum

Here is a Soca style groove incorporating both kit and conga drum. The incorporation of the conga is well suited to Latin American styles as the percussive element of this music was originally played by a group of percussionists, rather than a kit player. The right hand is playing the bell of the hi-hat, giving a very high pitched note. This may not necessarily be the way you play this groove the whole way through a tune, but is useful for changing up the timbre/texture of the groove while backing a soloist, for example. If you don’t own a conga drum, don’t panic! This groove will also sound great with the left hand playing a floor tom (situated to the left of your hi-hat). Another alternative is to play the left hand on the snare ghosting all the snare notes apart from the heavy accent.
